Ten essential adjectives to describe how you feel — in French.
The rule
To describe a feeling, use Je suis + adjective. But remember: French adjectives agree with the subject.
Masculine: Je suis fatigué. ·
Feminine: Je suis fatiguée. ·
Many adjectives add -e in the feminine form.
Listen and repeat
- Je suis heureux / heureuse. /œ.ʁø / œ.ʁøz/ I'm happy.
- Je suis triste. /tʁist/ I'm sad.
- Je suis fatigué(e). /fa.ti.ɡe/ I'm tired.
- Je suis nerveux / nerveuse. /nɛʁ.vø / nɛʁ.vøz/ I'm nervous.
- Je suis content(e). /kɔ̃.tɑ̃/ I'm pleased / happy.
- Je suis occupé(e). /ɔ.ky.pe/ I'm busy.
- Je suis stressé(e). /stʁɛ.se/ I'm stressed.
- Je suis calme. /kalm/ I'm calm.
- Je suis désolé(e). /de.zɔ.le/ I'm sorry.
- Je suis prêt(e). /pʁɛ/ I'm ready.






Important difference from English!
In French, "hungry", "thirsty", "hot" and "cold" use avoir (to have), not être:
J'ai faim. — I'm hungry. (lit. I have hunger)
J'ai soif. — I'm thirsty. (lit. I have thirst)
J'ai chaud. — I'm hot. (lit. I have heat)
J'ai froid. — I'm cold. (lit. I have cold)
