The rule
In French, the preposition you use depends on the type of place. There is no single rule like English in / at / on — but these three patterns cover almost everything:
à + la / l' → à la maison, à l'école, à l'aéroport, à Londres
au (= à + le) → au bureau, au parc, au supermarché
dans → inside an enclosed space: dans la cuisine, dans le bus
en → transport without article: en voiture, en avion, en train
