Lesson 3 of 12

I'm + role / age

Family roles, ages, and a few surprises.

Сімейна зустріч — знайомство із сусідом
Anna Hi! I'm a mother and a teacher. Nice to meet you!
Ben I'm a neighbour — I live next door. I'm 28.
Anna Oh! I'm 35. But shh — don't tell anyone!
"I'm a teacher" і "I'm 35" — в чому різниця? Чому в одному випадку є "a", а в іншому — ні?

Roles

A role is who you are to someone else: a mother, a friend, a neighbour. The pattern is the same: I'm + a/an + role.

Age

To say your age, use I'm + number. In spoken English we usually stop there. I'm twenty is already complete. For formal writing you can add years old.

Warning: Ukrainian speakers often say "I have 30 years", a direct translation of Мені 30 років. In English this sounds wrong. Always use I am + number.
