The story

They sit at the big table. Jo makes hot chocolate. Gabe says, “First, my parents moved to Scotland for work. I stayed with my gran to finish the school year. We call my parents every evening. Then I helped Gran at her book club. I liked it, but I missed spending time with people my age. After that, I saw your poster, but I felt too shy to come in. Finally, I wrote a rude comment. That was wrong. I'm sorry.”
Jo says, “You're welcome here, Gabe. But feeling lonely doesn't make hurtful comments OK. They must stop.” “I understand,” he says. “I'll be kind.” Sam offers his hand. “Let's try again. Sound and lights?” Gabe smiles. “Yes.”
The next Saturday is the show. At 5 pm, one hour before the start, Priya calls. Her voice is just a whisper. “I'm so sorry. I'm ill. I can't sing.” The best act of the show is gone.
