Before you read

You and restaurants abroad

When you order food in English, how does it usually go?

Step 1 · Text

The Second Evening

Read it twice: once on your own, then again with the audio. Notice how easy it is for Nina to understand now.

On the second evening, Tom says: “I’ve booked a table. Bring a jacket. It’s by the water.”

The restaurant is small, just ten tables and a view of the lake. On the other side, the lights of the villages are coming on, one by one.

The waiter speaks English slowly and smiles a lot. Nina understands everything he says. Then she notices that she understands everything, and that surprises her more than the view.

She orders the risotto with lake fish, because the waiter says it’s what people from Como really eat. Tom orders the same, “because I trust him more than the menu.”

They talk about the flight, the shampoo, the lake. Nobody looks at their phone.

When the bill comes, Nina reaches for her bag. “This one’s on me,” Tom says. “You’re my guest.” She wants to argue, and then, for once, she just says thank you.

That night, Nina writes three things in her list. All three happened at the same table.

Ordering dinner is easy. The hard part is asking for the bill when you don’t want the evening to end.

Step 2 · Listen and write

Five sentences from the story. Play each one on its own with the button beside it, as many times as you need, and write the missing word.

After the dialogue

Complete the line

Straight from the scenes you just heard. Pick the word that completes each line.

“Good evening. Do you have a ?”

“Almost. What do you ?”

“I’m to nuts.”

“Excuse me, could we have the , please?”

“This one’s me.”

Step 5 · Grammar

Polite requests: Could I, Can we, I’d like, Would you like

1 · Asking for something: Can I / Could we + verb

Can and could + base verb. Could sounds a little more polite. Add please at the end.

Can і could + базове дієслово.
canCan I pay by card?
couldCould we have the bill, please?
couldCould we share a starter?
2 · Ordering: I’d like / I’ll have / We’ll have

I’d like = I would like. It is softer than “I want”. I’ll have is also very common when you order.

I’d like = I would like. I’ll have теж дуже поширене, коли замовляєш.
I’d like + nounI’d like the risotto, please.
I’ll haveGreat, we’ll have that.
shortThe same for me, please.
3 · Offering: Would you like…? / Can I get you…?

The waiter offers with Would you like + noun or Would you like to + verb. Answer with “Yes, please” or “No, thank you”.

Офіціант пропонує через Would you like + іменник або Would you like to + дієслово. Відповідай «Yes, please» або «No, thank you».
+ nounWould you like a coffee?
+ to + verbWould you like to see the dessert menu?
waiterCan I get you something to drink?
4 · Less direct, more polite

In English, a direct order can sound rude, even with a smile. A question sounds polite.

too directGive me the bill.
politeCould we have the bill, please?
too directI want water.
politeCould I have some water, please?
5 · Check the idea
“Would you like to see the dessert menu?” Is the waiter asking for something, or offering something?
Offering. Would you like is how you offer.
Would you like означає пропозицію.
“Would you like a coffee?” Is “Yes, I would like” a good answer?
Not really. Say “Yes, please” or “Yes, I’d love one.”
Кажи «Yes, please» або «Yes, I’d love one.»
Which is more polite: “Can I pay by card?” or “Could I pay by card?”
Both are fine. Could is a little softer and more formal.

Now the practice. Every sentence comes from this episode. Write the missing word.

Could we the bill, please?
I’d the risotto, please.
you like to see the dessert menu?
Can I by card?
Great, we’ll that.
I get you something to drink?
I’m to nuts.
The for me, please.
