Warm-up · From Episode 12
Before you start
Two minutes on Episode 12
Do not look back at the lesson. Guess, even if you are not sure. Remembering something badly is what makes it stay.
Tom takes Nina back to the .
He takes a small, battered out of his pocket.
Tom writes thing in it, most days.
“We go and get proper coffee, and I show you page .”
The new tense this season is .
Episode 12 in one line: back to the bus stop, Tom’s own notebook, and a promise about page two.
This episode opens page two.
Before you read
You and airports
How do you feel at an airport?
Step 1 · Text
Page Two
Read it twice: once on your own, then again with the audio. Notice every “have” and “has”. That is the new tense.
Three weeks after the bus stop, Tom opens his notebook at page two and shows it to Nina. There is only one word on it: Como.
Через три тижні після зупинки Том відкриває блокнот на другій сторінці й показує її Ніні. Там лише одне слово: Комо.
“It’s a lake in Italy,” he says. “I went there once, when I was ten. I’ve always wanted to go back. Would you like to come with me?”
«Це озеро в Італії», каже він. «Я був там один раз, коли мені було десять. Я завжди хотів повернутися. Поїдеш зі мною?»
Nina’s brain starts to build a list of reasons to say no: work, money, and the fact that she has never travelled with anyone except her sister. Then she stops it. “Yes,” she says. “When?”
Мозок Ніни починає складати список причин відмовитися: робота, гроші і те, що вона ніколи ні з ким не подорожувала, крім сестри. Потім вона його зупиняє. «Так», каже вона. «Коли?»
On Friday morning they meet at Gatwick. Tom has one small bag. Nina has a suitcase. “It’s only three days,” he says. “I know,” she says. “I’ve packed for every kind of weather.”
У п'ятницю вранці вони зустрічаються в Гатвіку. У Тома одна маленька сумка. У Ніни валіза. «Це лише три дні», каже він. «Я знаю», каже вона. «Я спакувалася на будь-яку погоду.»
At check-in, her suitcase is two kilos too heavy. At security, her shampoo is too big. She watches it go into the bin and feels, for a second, like a criminal.
На реєстрації її валіза важча на два кілограми. На огляді її шампунь завеликий. Вона дивиться, як він летить у смітник, і на секунду почувається злочинницею.
Then they are at the gate, boarding passes in their hands, and the screen says: Milan Malpensa, on time. Nina has already written three things in her list, and the plane hasn’t even left yet.
А потім вони вже біля виходу на посадку, з посадковими талонами в руках, і на табло написано: Мілан Мальпенса, за розкладом. Ніна вже записала три речі у свій список, а літак ще навіть не вилетів.
Some trips start at the airport. Some start with one word on a page.
Деякі подорожі починаються в аеропорту. Деякі починаються з одного слова на сторінці.
Step 2 · Listen and write
What did you hear?
Five sentences from the story. Play each one on its own with the button beside it, as many times as you need, and write the missing word.
There is only one on it.
I’ve always wanted to go .
Tom has one small .
Her suitcase is two kilos too .
The plane hasn’t even left .

Lesson 2 Lesson 2 · With your teacher · діалог, граматика, вправи, говоріння
Before we start
Say yes, or think about it?
Tom asks Nina to come to Italy, and she says yes before her brain can stop her. What would you do?
Before the dialogue
Quick check: the text
You read this at home. Three questions, no looking back.
There is only one word on page two of Tom’s notebook.
Nina has travelled with a lot of friends before.
Their flight is delayed.

NinaHave we forgotten anything?
TomWe’ve checked in, we’ve been through security, and you’ve lost your shampoo. I think we’re ready.
After the dialogue
Complete the line
Straight from the scenes you just heard. Pick the word that completes each line.
“Can I see your , please?”
“I’m afraid it’s two kilos over the .”
“Would you like a window seat or an seat?”
“Phones and belts in the .”
“The flight to Milan Malpensa is now .”
Step 5 · Grammar
Present Perfect: already, just, yet, ever
1 · The form: have / has + past participle
We use it for something in the past that matters now. We do not say when it happened. The result is what counts.
Ми вживаємо його для чогось у минулому, що важливе зараз. Ми не кажемо, коли це сталося. Важить результат.
I / you / we / they
We’ve checked in.
he / she / it
She has lost her shampoo.
negative
I haven’t said a word.
question
Have we forgotten anything?
2 · just, already, yet
just means a moment ago. already means earlier than you expected. yet goes at the end of negatives and questions: not until now.
just означає щойно. already означає вже, раніше, ніж очікували. yet стоїть у кінці заперечень і питань: ще ні, досі ні.
just
I’ve just done it.
already
Nina has already written three things.
yet (negative)
The plane hasn’t left yet.
yet (question)
Have you taken your laptop out yet?
3 · ever and never: your whole life until now
ever in questions, never in answers. Both mean “at any time in my life, up to now”.
ever у питаннях, never у відповідях. Обидва означають «будь-коли в житті, до цього моменту».
question
Have you ever been to Italy?
answer
She has never travelled with anyone except her sister.
always
I’ve always wanted to go back.
4 · Present Perfect or Past Simple?
If you say when (yesterday, in 2019, when I was ten), use Past Simple. If there is no time and the result matters now, use Present Perfect.
Якщо ти кажеш коли (вчора, у 2019, коли мені було десять), вживай Past Simple. Якщо часу немає і важливий результат зараз, вживай Present Perfect.
time given
I went there when I was ten.
no time, result now
I’ve packed for every kind of weather.
5 · Check the idea
“I’ve just done it.” Did Tom do it yesterday, or a few seconds ago?
A few seconds ago. That is what just means.
Кілька секунд тому. Саме це означає just.
Why is “I’ve been there when I was ten” wrong?
Because “when I was ten” is a finished time. With a finished time, English uses Past Simple: “I went there when I was ten.”
Бо «when I was ten» це завершений час. Із завершеним часом англійська вживає Past Simple: «I went there when I was ten.»
“The plane hasn’t left yet.” Is the plane still at the airport?
Yes. Hasn’t … yet means it has not happened, but we expect it soon.
Так. Hasn’t … yet означає, що цього ще не сталося, але ми чекаємо, що скоро станеться.
Now the practice. Every sentence comes from this episode. Write the correct form of the verb in brackets.
I’ve for every kind of weather. (pack)
I haven’t a word. (say)
I’ve just it. (do)
We through security. (be)
The plane left yet. (have, negative)
Have you ever to Italy? (be)
I there when I was ten. (go, finished time)
She her shampoo. (lose)
