How to Get the Most from This Lesson

  1. First, just read and listen. Nothing is checked here. Tap the underlined words to see them in Ukrainian.
  2. Then do the exercises.
  3. At the end, speak out loud. This is the most important part of the lesson. Do not skip it.

Lesson 1 Lesson 1 · On your own · текст, аудіювання, словник
Warm-up · From Episode 7
Before you start

Two minutes on Episode 7

Do not look back at the lesson. Guess, even if you are not sure. Remembering something badly is what makes it stay.

“I’m from the café on Friday,” Tom says.

Nina already said yes, on .

Emma’s line: “You’re always this.”

Nina’s worry: “What if he’s only being ?”

Emma’s reassurance: “You’re just out.”

Episode 7 in one line: a fixed plan is real, and worry is not the same as evidence.
This episode is Friday itself, the day the worrying finally has to stop and something can just happen.
Before you read

When you finally stop overthinking

Sometimes the worrying stops, and the moment turns out simple. What usually does it for you?

Step 1 · Text

The Question

Read it twice: once on your own, then again with the audio.

Friday arrives the way Fridays do, whether you are ready or not.

П'ятниця настає так, як настають усі п'ятниці, готова ти чи ні.

Nina walks in at three, and Tom is already there, laptop closed, two cups of tea already ordered. “I’m going to guess you take it the same way as last time,” he says.

Ніна заходить о третій, а Том уже там, ноутбук закритий, дві чашки чаю вже замовлені. «Я здогадуюсь, ти п'єш його так само, як минулого разу», каже він.
Nina arriving to find Tom already there, two cups of tea waiting

He is right. Of course he is right.

Він має рацію. Звісно, він має рацію.
Nina and Tom talking easily at the café table

They talk for an hour, easily this time, the questions from Wednesday already answered. Then Tom goes quiet for a second. “I’m going to say something, and you can say no.” “Okay.” “My friend’s band is playing on Saturday. Small place, nothing fancy. I’m going, and I’d like it if you were going too.”

Вони говорять годину, цього разу легко, питання зі середи вже отримали відповіді. Потім Том на секунду замовкає. «Я збираюсь дещо сказати, і ти можеш відмовити.» «Гаразд.» «Гурт мого друга виступає в суботу. Невелике місце, нічого особливого. Я йду, і мені було б приємно, якби пішла й ти.»
Tom inviting Nina to the gig on Saturday

Nina’s brain, for once, does not build a single extra sentence around it. “I’d like that,” she says. That is the whole answer, and it is enough.

Мозок Ніни, вперше, не добудовує до цього жодного зайвого речення. «Мені було б приємно», каже вона. Це вся відповідь, і цього достатньо.

Some questions are so simple, the hardest part is not overthinking the answer.

Деякі питання настільки прості, що найважче — не передумувати над відповіддю.
Step 2 · Listen and write

What did you hear?

Five sentences from the story. Play each one on its own with the button beside it, as many times as you need, and write the missing word.

“I’m going to you take it the same way.”
Tom goes for a second.
Small place, nothing .
Her brain does not build a single sentence.
The hardest part is not the answer.

Step 3 · Words and phrases

Listen and repeat

Try to remember first, then flip the card. Say every phrase out loud. Not in your head, out loud, so your mouth remembers it.

  • whether you are ready or not готова ти чи ні
  • I’m going to guess… Я здогадуюсь...
  • annoyingly accurate дратівливо точно
  • I pay attention. Я звертаю увагу, уважний.
  • an alarming start тривожний початок
  • nothing fancy нічого особливого
  • I’d like that. Мені було б приємно.
  • overthinking надмірні роздуми
  • saving it for later залишаю це на потім
  • He asked you to WHAT? Він попросив тебе про ЩО?
  • That’s a date. Це побачення.
  • specifically /spəˈsɪfɪkli/ саме, конкретно
  • I’m going to need details. Мені потрібні подробиці.
Lesson 2 Lesson 2 · With your teacher · діалог, граматика, вправи, говоріння
Before we start

When someone asks you directly

You just read about Tom asking Nina straight out, no games. When someone asks you something directly, what's your instinct?

Before the dialogue

Quick check: the text

You read this at home. Three questions, no looking back.

Tom already knows how Nina takes her tea.

Nina needs time to think before answering Tom.

Tom invites Nina to see his friend’s band on Saturday.

Before the dialogue

Answer in a few words

Short answers, from the text. The last one needs a full thought, not one word.

What is already waiting on the table when Nina arrives?
How does Tom know how Nina takes her tea?
What is Tom’s friend’s band doing on Saturday?
What does Nina say when Tom asks her?
What does Emma think Tom’s invitation really is?

After the dialogue

Complete the line

Straight from the scenes you just heard. Pick the word that completes each line.

“No sugar, and you complain about the milk .”

“That’s… annoyingly .”

“That’s an alarming .”

“Small place, nothing .”

“I’m saving it for , don’t worry.”

Step 5 · Grammar

Going to: plans and intentions

1 · Meaning: a decision already in your head

Going to talks about the future, but it starts in the present: a decision you have already made, an intention already sitting in your head, before you say a word about it.

Going to говорить про майбутнє, але починається в теперішньому: рішення, яке ти вже ухвалила, намір, що вже сидить у голові, ще до того, як ти сказала про нього хоч слово.
a personal intentionI’m going to say something.
Decided, before he opens his mouth.
a plan already formingI’m going, and I’d like it if you were going too.
Tom has already decided, for himself.

Going to versus the fixed plan from Episode 7: Present Continuous (I’m working on Friday) usually means something arranged with someone or something else, a time, a place. Going to (I’m going to ask her) is more personal: a decision inside one person’s head, not yet arranged with anybody.

Going to проти фіксованого плану з Епізоду 7: Present Continuous (I'm working on Friday) зазвичай означає щось узгоджене з кимось чи чимось іншим: час, місце. Going to (I'm going to ask her) особистіше: рішення всередині голови однієї людини, ще не узгоджене ні з ким.
2 · Form: am/is/are + going to + base verb
+I’m going to guess. She’s going to ask.
−I’m not going to overthink it.
?Are you going to say yes?
Стверджувальна форма: am/is/are + going to + базове дієслово. Заперечення: am not / isn't / aren't + going to + дієслово. Питання: Am/Is/Are + хто + going to + дієслово?
The verb after going to never changes. No -s, no -ing, no past form, always the plain, bare verb.
She’s going to ask, not asks or asking.
3 · Four mistakes almost everybody makes

I going to say something. → I’m going to say something. Am, is or are can never disappear before going to, exactly like in Present Continuous.

Am, is чи are ніколи не може зникнути перед going to, точно як у Present Continuous.

She's going to says yes. → She’s going to say yes. The verb after going to stays completely bare, never with an -s.

Дієслово після going to лишається повністю голим, ніколи з -s.

Are you going ask her? → Are you going to ask her? To is part of the structure, it cannot be dropped even in a fast question.

To є частиною структури, його не можна пропустити навіть у швидкому питанні.

I'm going to working on Friday. → I’m working on Friday. An already arranged, fixed plan with a set time usually sounds more natural in plain Present Continuous, without going to.

Уже узгоджений, фіксований план із визначеним часом зазвичай звучить природніше просто в Present Continuous, без going to.

4 · Check the idea before you practise
“I’m going to say something.” Did Tom decide this before he spoke, or while he was speaking?
Before. Going to always points to a decision that already exists in someone’s head.
До того. Going to завжди вказує на рішення, яке вже існує в голові людини.
“I’m going, and I’d like it if you were going too.” Has Tom already decided for himself?
Yes. His going is already fixed. Her going is the open question.
Так. Його «іду» вже вирішено. Її «іду» — це відкрите питання.
Why is “She's going to says yes” wrong?
Because the verb after going to never takes -s, or any other ending. It stays in its bare form.
Бо дієслово після going to ніколи не приймає -s чи будь-яке інше закінчення. Воно лишається в чистій формі.

Now the practice. Every sentence comes from this episode. Write the correct form with going to.

you take it the same way. (I / guess)
something. (I / say)
, and I’d like it if you were going too. (I / go)
yes? (you / say)
it. (not / I / overthink)
details. (I / need)

Part 3 · Speak
Speaking 1 · From the text

Retell the story in five steps

One sentence out loud for each card. Say it yourself first, and only then open the model.

Step 1 · arrival

What is already waiting when Nina arrives?

Two cups of tea are already ordered when she arrives.
Step 2 · an hour

How does this conversation feel, compared to before?

They talk for an hour, easily this time.
Step 3 · the invitation

What does Tom invite Nina to?

He invites her to his friend’s band on Saturday.
Step 4 · the answer

What does Nina say, and how quickly?

She says “I’d like that,” without overthinking it.
Step 5 · Emma

What does Emma call it?

She calls it a date, and she wants all the details.

Now all five sentences in a row, in one recording.

Speaking 2 · From the dialogue

Be Nina

Tom speaks, you answer as Nina. Round 1: read along with the model. Round 2: speak on your own, with only a Ukrainian hint on screen.

Speaking 3 · Your turn

Something you have decided

Not a fixed appointment, a personal decision. What have you already decided to do, even if nobody else knows yet?

1 · A decision “I’m going to __________.”
2 · What you're not going to do “I’m not going to __________.”
3 · A question for someone else “Are you going to __________?”

Now say them out loud. The page will listen and tell you which phrases from the lesson you used.

Speaking 4 · Fast

Ten seconds to answer

Five questions in a row, all about your plans. Answer short and answer fast.

Get ready to speak out loud.

Lesson 3 Lesson 3 · On your own · місія, рефлексія, надсилання
Part 2 · Exercises
Exercise 1

Match the pairs

Tap a phrase on the left, then its meaning on the right.

Exercise 2

True or False?

About the text and the dialogue.

Tom already has two teas ordered when Nina arrives.

Tom correctly guesses how Nina takes her tea.

Tom invites Nina to a big, fancy concert.

Nina says yes without overthinking it, in the moment.

Nina immediately agrees with Emma that it is a date.

Emma wants all the details.

Exercise 3

Going to, or a fixed plan?

A personal intention, or something already arranged with someone else? Pick the natural form.

I’m something. (a decision, just now)

I’m from the café on Friday. (already fixed with Tom)

I’m details. (Emma's intention)

She’s yes, probably. (a guess about intention)

We’re at six on Saturday. (already agreed, time set)

I’m not it. (a personal decision)

Exercise 4

Put the lines in order

This is Scene 2. Drag a line by its handle, or move it with the arrows, until the conversation makes sense. Not sure? Listen to the scene and let your ear decide.

  1. Tom: I’m going to say something, and you can say no.
  2. Nina: That’s an alarming start.
  3. Tom: My friend’s band is playing on Saturday. Small place, nothing fancy.
  4. Nina: Okay.
  5. Tom: I’m going, and I’d like it if you were going too.
  6. Nina: I’d like that.

Exercise 5

Translate into English

Write full sentences. Capital letters and punctuation are not checked.

Я збираюсь дещо сказати.
Ти скажеш так?
Мені було б приємно.
Це побачення.
Мені потрібні подробиці.

Speaking 5 · In real life

Your mission this week

Say yes to something small, quickly, before your brain has time to build a story around it.

Bonus · A decision I've already made
Bonus

I’m going to…

Not checked, not sent anywhere. Just yours. What have you already decided, even quietly, even to yourself only?

Nina’s honest line, the whole answer: “I’d like that.”

Not every decision needs ten sentences around it. Some of the most honest ones are the shortest.

Tap a starter, then finish the sentence. Three lines are enough.
