What Actually
Happened

Monday, three o'clock, and one question Nina finally decides to ask out loud.

Level A2 ≈ 25 minutes British English Past Simple, again

How to Get the Most from This Lesson

  1. First, just read and listen. Nothing is checked here. Tap the underlined words to see them in Ukrainian.
  2. Then do the exercises.
  3. At the end, speak out loud. This is the most important part of the lesson. Do not skip it.
Nina and Tom talking honestly at the café table, Monday afternoon
Lesson 1 Lesson 1 · On your own · текст, аудіювання, словник
Warm-up · From Episode 9
Before you start

Two minutes on Episode 9

Do not look back at the lesson. Guess, even if you are not sure. Remembering something badly is what makes it stay.

Tom calls Nina “a friend from the .”

Nina predicts: “This is going to be a night.”

Nina tells Tom her head is .

Emma: “That’s a . You know that’s a .”

Emma’s challenge: “Are you going to ask him what he ?”

Episode 9 in one line: a true sentence still landed as a wound, and Nina left early rather than ask.
This episode is Nina finally choosing to ask, instead of guessing for another week.
Before you read

Asking, instead of guessing

Think of a time you finally asked a hard question, instead of guessing the answer. What happened?

Step 1 · Text

Since the Bus Stop

Read it twice: once on your own, then again with the audio. Watch for when, before, and after.

Nina does not call. She does not text either. On Monday, she simply walks into the café at three, the way she always does now, and sits down.

Ніна не телефонує. Не пише повідомлення теж. У понеділок вона просто заходить до кав'ярні о третій, як робить це тепер завжди, і сідає.
Nina walking into the café on Monday with quiet determination

Tom looks up, surprised, then careful. “You left early on Saturday.” “I did.” “Was it really your head?” “Not really.”

Том підводить погляд, здивований, потім обережний. «Ти пішла рано в суботу.» «Так.» «Це справді через голову?» «Не зовсім.»
Tom looking up at Nina, surprised then careful

So Nina tells him. When Danny asked who she was, Tom hesitated, and in that one second, she decided he was embarrassed by her. That was what actually happened, inside her head, while the band played on.

Тож Ніна розповідає йому. Коли Денні спитав, хто вона, Том завагався, і за ту одну секунду вона вирішила, що він її соромиться. Ось що насправді відбувалося в її голові, поки гурт грав далі.

Tom goes quiet, the same quiet from the shelter. “Danny’s been teasing me about someone for two months,” he says. “I panicked. I said the safe thing, and it came out wrong.”

Том замовкає, тою ж тишею, що й під навісом. «Денні дражнить мене кимось уже два місяці», каже він. «Я запанікував. Сказав безпечну річ, і вона прозвучала не так.»
Tom making his small confession

“Two months?” Nina asks. “Since the bus stop,” Tom says. “I noticed you before you noticed me. I just didn’t say it out loud.”

«Два місяці?» питає Ніна. «Від зупинки», каже Том. «Я помітив тебе раніше, ніж ти мене. Просто не сказав цього вголос.»

It is a small confession, made two months late, and it changes nothing and everything at the same time.

Це маленьке зізнання, зроблене на два місяці пізніше, і воно не міняє нічого і водночас усе.
Nina and Tom sharing quiet mutual relief

The truth, once someone finally says it, is almost always smaller than the story you built instead.

Правда, коли хтось нарешті її каже, майже завжди менша, ніж історія, яку ти вигадала натомість.
Step 2 · Listen and write

What did you hear?

Five sentences from the story. Play each one on its own with the button beside it, as many times as you need, and write the missing word.

When Danny asked, Tom .
Danny’s been me about someone.
I . I said the safe thing.
I you before you noticed me.
Smaller than the story you instead.

Step 3 · Words and phrases

Listen and repeat

Try to remember first, then flip the card. Say every phrase out loud. Not in your head, out loud, so your mouth remembers it.

  • the way she always does now так, як робить це тепер завжди
  • surprised, then careful здивований, потім обережний
  • Was it really your head? Це справді через голову?
  • teasing /ˈtiːzɪŋ/ дражнити
  • panicked /ˈpænɪkt/ запанікував
  • came out wrong прозвучало не так
  • I’m sorry. Мені шкода, вибач.
  • noticed you before you noticed me помітив тебе раніше, ніж ти мене
  • a small confession маленьке зізнання
  • at the same time водночас
  • I knew it. Я знала!
  • I’m always right. Я завжди права.
  • built instead вигадала натомість
Lesson 2 Lesson 2 · With your teacher · діалог, граматика, вправи, говоріння
Before we start

What actually happened?

You just read about Nina finally asking Tom the question she had been avoiding. What usually stops you from asking?

Before the dialogue

Quick check: the text

You read this at home. Three questions, no looking back.

Nina walks into the café on Monday without calling first.

Tom hesitated because he didn’t like Nina.

Tom noticed Nina before she noticed him, since the bus stop.

Before the dialogue

Answer in a few words

Short answers, from the text. The last one needs a full thought, not one word.

What does Nina ask Tom about?
Why did Tom hesitate at the gig?
Since when has Tom noticed Nina?
Who does Nina tell about the conversation?
What does the closing line say about the truth?

After the dialogue

Complete the line

Straight from the scenes you just heard. Pick the word that completes each line.

“Danny’s been me about someone for two months.”

“And it came out .”

“I . I said the safe thing.”

“I noticed you before you me.”

“I’m always right. Write that in your .”

Step 5 · Grammar

Past Simple: telling a story in order

1 · Recap: what Past Simple already does

From Episode 3: one completed action in the past, told with regular -ed verbs or irregular forms. Today, the same tense gets a new job: putting two or more past actions in order.

З Епізоду 3: одна завершена дія в минулому, розказана регулярними дієсловами на -ed або неправильними формами. Сьогодні той самий час отримує нову роботу: розставити дві чи більше минулих дій у порядку.
regularpanicked, noticed, changed
irregularsaid, went, told, left
2 · Form: when, before, after, then

These four words link two past actions and show which one came first.

Ці чотири слова з'єднують дві минулі дії і показують, яка з них була першою.
whenat that moment
When Danny asked, Tom hesitated.
beforeearlier than something else
He noticed her before she noticed him.
afterlater than something else
After the gig, she asked him directly.
thennext, in the same story
She listened, then she understood.
When with two past actions often means the first one triggered the second, almost at the same moment.
When Danny asked, Tom hesitated. The question came, and the hesitation followed immediately.
3 · Four mistakes almost everybody makes

When Danny asks, Tom hesitates. → When Danny asked, Tom hesitated. A story about the past needs both verbs in the past, the whole way through.

Історія про минуле потребує обох дієслів у минулому часі, до самого кінця.

I noticed you before you notice me. → I noticed you before you noticed me. Before does not change the tense on either side. Both halves stay in Past Simple.

Before не змінює час у жодній з половин. Обидві частини лишаються в Past Simple.

She said the safe thing, it came out wrong. → She said the safe thing, and it came out wrong. Two full sentences about the past still need a connector between them, exactly like in Episode 4.

Два повних речення про минуле все одно потребують сполучника між собою, точно як в Епізоді 4.

Danny teased him two months. → Danny’s been teasing him for two months. An action that started in the past and is still true now needs a different shape, not plain Past Simple. For now, just recognise it, said the natural way.

Дія, яка почалась у минулому і досі правдива зараз, потребує іншої форми, не простого Past Simple. Поки що просто впізнавай її в природному вигляді.

4 · Check the idea before you practise
“When Danny asked, Tom hesitated.” Which happened first?
Danny's question. When usually signals that the first action triggers the second, almost immediately.
Питання Денні. When зазвичай сигналізує, що перша дія спричиняє другу, майже одразу.
“He noticed her before she noticed him.” Whose noticing came first?
Tom's. Before points backward, to the earlier of the two actions.
Тома. Before вказує назад, на ту з двох дій, яка була раніше.
Why does the sentence need and before “it came out wrong”?
Because two complete past sentences joined together still need a connector, the same rule from Episode 4, just now inside a Past Simple story.
Бо два повних минулих речення, з'єднані разом, усе одно потребують сполучника, те саме правило з Епізоду 4, тепер усередині історії в Past Simple.

Now the practice. Every sentence comes from this episode. Write the correct past form of the verb in brackets.

When Danny asked, Tom . (hesitate)
I . I said the safe thing. (panic)
He her before she noticed him. (notice)
Nina early on Saturday. (leave)
She him what actually happened. (tell)
The truth was smaller than the story she instead. (build)
Emma something changed back then. (say)

Part 3 · Speak
Speaking 1 · From the text

Retell the story in five steps

One sentence out loud for each card, in the past. Say it yourself first, and only then open the model.

Step 1 · Monday

What did Nina do, without calling first?

She simply walked into the café at three and sat down.
Step 2 · the question

What did Nina finally ask?

She asked why he hesitated when Danny asked who she was.
Step 3 · the reason

Why did Tom panic?

Danny had been teasing him about someone for two months.
Step 4 · the confession

Since when did Tom notice Nina?

He noticed her since the bus stop, before she noticed him.
Step 5 · Emma

What did Emma say she already knew?

She said she knew it, and that she’s always right.

Now all five sentences in a row, in one recording.

Speaking 2 · From the dialogue

Be Nina

Tom speaks, you answer as Nina. Round 1: read along with the model. Round 2: speak on your own, with only a Ukrainian hint on screen.

Speaking 3 · Your turn

A short story, in order

Two things that happened, one after the other. Use when, before, after, or then to connect them.

1 · What happened first “First, __________.”
2 · Then what happened “Then, __________.”
3 · With when or before “When/Before __________.”

Now say them out loud. The page will listen and tell you which phrases from the lesson you used.

Speaking 4 · Fast

Ten seconds to answer

Five questions in a row, all about the past. Answer short and answer fast.

Get ready to speak out loud.

Lesson 3 Lesson 3 · On your own · місія, рефлексія, надсилання
Part 2 · Exercises
Exercise 1

Match the pairs

Tap a phrase on the left, then its meaning on the right.

Exercise 2

True or False?

About the text and the dialogue.

Nina calls Tom before going to see him.

Tom already suspects it wasn’t really her head.

Danny has been teasing Tom about someone for two months.

Tom first noticed Nina at the gig on Saturday.

Emma says she already suspected something had changed.

Emma is annoyed that she was right.

Exercise 3

When, before, after, or then?

Pick the word that puts the two actions in the right order.

Danny asked, Tom hesitated.

He noticed her she noticed him.

the gig, Nina went home alone.

She listened, she understood.

Tom explained, everything made more sense.

Monday, Nina said nothing to Tom at all.

Exercise 4

Put the lines in order

This is Scene 2. Drag a line by its handle, or move it with the arrows, until the conversation makes sense. Not sure? Listen to the scene and let your ear decide.

  1. Nina: When Danny asked who I was, you hesitated. Why?
  2. Tom: Because Danny’s been teasing me about someone for two months, and I panicked.
  3. Nina: So you said the safe thing.
  4. Tom: And it came out wrong. I’m sorry.
  5. Nina: Two months?
  6. Tom: Since the bus stop. I noticed you before you noticed me.

Exercise 5

Translate into English

Write full sentences. Capital letters and punctuation are not checked.

Коли Денні спитав, Том завагався.
Я запанікував.
Я помітив тебе раніше, ніж ти мене.
Мені шкода.
Я знала!

Speaking 5 · In real life

Your mission this week

Tell someone, in order, what actually happened, instead of only the feeling it left behind.

Bonus · A story I built instead
Bonus

The truth, and the story I built instead

Not checked, not sent anywhere. Just yours. Was there ever a gap between what someone meant and what you decided it meant?

The line from the story: “The truth, once someone finally says it, is almost always smaller than the story you built instead.”

This does not need a big example. Even a small one, written honestly, is enough.

Tap a starter, then finish the sentence. Three lines are enough.
